the strange, but interesting things that happen when away from home…

Campbells Soup and a bowl

Guess my adventures never end. Since my last post, have been struggling to beat a cold that wanted to keep me in bed since I got to Japan.

I decided to sleep all day on Saturday instead of going out of my room and struggle down the 50 or so steps to the dining hall in the cold wind.

So, my plan in my head was to sleep until 5pm, shower and then open a can of chicken soup that I bought the day before at the mall and add some pepper to it and have so hot tea. Sounds easy enough right.

Plan gets in action around 10pm, guess I overslept. I call my neighbour who bought a bowl in the store the day before also and she passes me some hot sauce from her island to add to the soup. This is to ‘sweat’ the cold out..haha

I open the soup and head to the microwave ( which is on the first floor of our block :S Have no idea why they have it there. When I get the room with the microwave, i’m told that its closed because they room closes at 10 ( these people close everything to early) But the guy is nice enough to me and opens the room and let me heat up the soup. sooo happy

Everything on the machine is in Japanese and of course I dont understand one thing that is written on it. He realises that I have no idea which is the time and start button. So he presses the buttons and the microwave comes to life.

About a half minute later, it beeps and stops. I open the door and steam rushes out and I can smell the lovely chicken soup. I’m so excited! Closest thing to my moms chicken soup that she makes for me when i’m sick.

The bowl is hot so have to use my shawl from around my neck to hold the bowl cause dont have an oven mitt. I thank the guy and head back to my room. The smell of the soup i’m sure woke everyone up as I walked through the halls to my room, wayyyyyy on the other end of the 3rd floor. I finally get to my room. Open the first door, and then the other ( there are 2 doors to get into my room, guess it helps to keep the cold out),

I put the key in wall and turn the power on ( cant get power until I take the key out the door and turn it in the wall. Nice way of saving power. We can’t leave our room until we take off the power because its on the wall, so its either you leave power on and leave your room unlocked, or take the power off when leaving and lock the doors).

So, yea, I put the key in the wall, power on! Put the soup on my desk and start taking off my layers of clothes from my run downstairs. All of a sudden I hear sqqqqqqqqqqqqeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeekkkkkk. I look at my desk and the bowl of soup is slowly changing shape. It no longer is round, but is sucking in and melting :(

I can see bubbles inside the bowl and the soup looks like it is still cooking. :(  My dinner is slowly eating itself.

I quickly grab the bowl up and run to the washroom and run cold water over it. But kinda too late. The bowl is now a weird twisted shape and the soup inside by this time isnt edible. I can’t even get the lid off the bowl.

I could cry at that point! I slept all day, missed breakfast, lunch and dinner. The kitchen had closed an hour before and there is no where else I can get anything to eat.

Not sure what you guys would do? But I was desperate. I have no bowl to put the last can of soup in. So I go into survivor mode. All i have in my room is 2 sips of water in a bottle from the day before and a can of unopened soup and hot water. Could do with a miracle at that point. I decided. I rather eat warm soup than nothing at all. So I open the can of soup, pour half into a glass and then put hot water in the other glass and then pour the other half of the can into the hot water.

Sounds yucky. Well it was. Cold soup sucks. But when you are hungry, guess that will do. I pour hot sauce in it and just swallow it without tasting it!

N.B -> I was told the bowl was microwavable.
